Proto-libertarians, apathetic “independents”, and people who identify as as conservative solely for identity's sake rather than a deep philosophical reflection still recognize the impact of money and special interests corrupting our government and screwing them over. The Tea Party initially had that focus and then was promptly co-opted and infiltrated with all manner of right wing nuttery.
Such people- and I have many examples in my life, know the system is corrupt and they are being screwed over. They are just too lazy and/or uninformed to recognize what policies are best to address this on anything more than an emotional level. My mother last night, literally, told me that she was torn between Rand Paul and #BernieSanders !
